Shift into a new gear by starting your journey in the cycling industry with a 12-week, full-time, paid work placement! Train with master mechanics, tone your skills, and gain valuable experience to set yourself up for a successful career as a bicycle technician.

The Bike Shop is partnering with Katimavik and Two Wheel View to bring this exciting opportunity for you to take your first step into the world of professional bicycle repair.

The Job

GearShift is a 12-week paid work placement, working alongside and learning from professional mechanics in a real service workshop at The Bike Shop. Starting 1-2 weeks after each Gap program cycle finishes, you will work full time as a Bike Builder or Junior Service Technician, helping to build new bikes or work on straightforward maintenance, repair, and upgrade jobs. GearShift participants will earn $17 per hour for 35-40 hours per week during the work placement.

Our goal is to be able to offer permanent positions to as many GearShift participants as possible. While there may not always be a full-time role available for you right away, we might also be able to offer part-time, casual, and seasonal positions based on availability.

GearShift is focused on providing opportunities in the service field to help develop the next generation of bike mechanics, but there are always roles for people who are interested in a different path. Reach out directly to your program director, speak with The Bike Shop staff at Two Wheel View events, or email us directly at gearshift@thebikeshop.com to learn more!

GearShift is targeted at people coming right out of the Gap program, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for you. If you’re in Gap right now, let us know – we will keep you on file and reach out for the next placement. If you’ve already graduated, send us your resume and let us know how you’ve been keeping up with your mechanic skills.

Who Can Apply?

GearShift is open exclusively to Two Wheel View Gap program graduates. You can apply if you are:

• Between 18 and 30 years old

• Not a full-time post-secondary student

• Currently enrolled in or have already completed the Two Wheel View Gap program

• Interested in a career in the cycling industry

• Able to work 35-40 hours per week during the work placement

If you don’t meet all the requirements above, we are unfortunately unable to place you in GearShift. Don’t worry – if you want to join The Bike Shop, send us your resume at jobs@thebikeshop.com or reach out to gearshift@thebikeshop.com to discuss your specific circumstances!

What is Katimavik FuturePerfect?

GearShift is proudly supported by the Katimavik FuturePerfect program. FuturePerfect is a program funded by Employment and Social Development Canada which seeks to help young adults like you find employment experience and develop skills in areas aligned with your interests and talents.

While you work with us to develop your mechanic skills, you will also work with your Katimavik coordinator on general employability skills, such as resume writing, interviewing, and accountability.

Your coordinator will also act as a resource in case you have any challenges or problems during your work placement.

How Do I Sign Up?

We currently have space for up to 1 GearShift participant at a time at each of our retail stores. To be considered, make sure you:

1. Speak with your Two Wheel View program coordinator. Two Wheel View will be helping us zero-in on candidates as early as possible, so make sure they know.

2. Let us know you’re interested at the Interview Fair. We will be in-person at the midpoint of the Gap program to conduct mock interviews. Let us know you’re interested in GearShift and we’ll make sure to spend some extra time with you to see if you’re a fit!

3. Give us your resume! Please give us your resume in-person at the Interview Fair or email it to gearshift@thebikeshop.com as soon as you can.

We will be choosing candidates 1-2 weeks after the Interview Fair for each Gap program. If you aren’t sure or can’t apply in time, don’t worry – you can still be considered for future placements!
