Pedal threads
The first thing to know is that the pedal threads are different from left side and right side. The right-side pedal has a right-hand thread (removes counter-clockwise & installs clockwise). The left-side pedal has a left-hand thread (removes clockwise & installs counter-clockwise). Many pedals are stamped with “L” and “R” to assist in identifying your left and right pedals.
What you need
Depending on the type of pedals you have, you may need a pedal wrench or an allen key, also known as a hex wrench.
The allen key method will use a 6mm or 8mm allen key that will be inserted into the shaft of the pedal from the inside of the crank arm.
The pedal wrench method will use a 15mm pedal wrench that will be inserted on the flat portion of the shaft of the pedal.
Pedal Removal
1. Mount bike in repair stand if you have one.
2. Rotate bike until right pedal is easily accessed.
3. For the right pedal, use your pedal wrench or allen key by positioning for optimal leverage. You can try positioning the wrench and crank arm to form a 90-degree angle.
4. Grab opposite crank arm for leverage. Turn the pedal wrench in a counter-clockwise direction to remove right pedal. Once loosened, you can move the crank arm forward to remove the pedal completely.
5. Repeat steps on the left side by turning the pedal wrench in a clock-wise position to loosen and you can turn crank forward to remove the pedal completely.
Pedal Installation
1. Mount bike in repair stand if you have one.
2. Grease the threads on both pedals.
3. Use fingers to thread right side pedal into the right crank arm in a clock-wise direction. Once threaded in, you can pedal backward to install pedal all the way.
4. Use your pedal wrench or allen key to tighten pedal by holding wrench with one hand while holding the opposite crank arm with the other hand.
5. Repeat steps for the left side but thread pedals in a counter-clockwise direction.
